Blog Post Comments?

I have just spent 2 hours going thru my google reader posts (I actively read 141 blogs .... currently .... I enjoy adding new friends) and leaving comments. I still have 108 posts to go. But it brings up a question ........

I review your posts and comment when I can, but most I am unable to at the time, so I save the posts and do a marathon of comments. However, I usually can't come up with anything cleaver to say, especially that hasn't already been said, so it's something simple like "beautiful" or "nice work", etc. So my question is.... what are your feelings on comments? I for one enjoy knowing that you were here visiting so even if it's just a hello comment or something of that sort, I enjoy it. Do you?

Please comment with your thoughts on this ......... :-)

Interesting question. I actually do enjoy reading comments on my blog - however short and sweet. It does take a lot of time to read all the blogs I follow but as I'm nosy and like to see what people are up to I still think it's worth every second.
Another thought - if there were no comments allowed on blogs - would we blog?!?!?!
It will be interesting to see how other people comment on your comments!!!

Sometimes the simplest comment makes my day, so yes... please leave comments even if they're only one word long! There's no need to be clever on my account! I'm just flattered that you visit!

I too am very flattered by a visit...just knowing that someone 'stopped by for a visit' makes me smile! Hearing from others is always so nice, and a simple 'Hello' somethimes is all that is needed. *smile*
PS, Thanks, and I really enjoy and appreciate your visits Bonnie.

Well...since I blogged for several years before there were any other tatting blogs, I rarely had comments. I didn't know if anyone read it or not, but I write mostly for myself anyway. Still, it's nice to know what has an impact on others, what they want to know more of, what they enjoy, etc. The only problem with comments on older posts (and I'm always delighted that there is something of value from what I've written in the past) is that I can't always respond to the person if they don't have a google account or don't leave an email. The response will go on that post unless I make a whole new post. Someone will ask a question about something I posted 3 years ago and I don't have a way to contact them.

BTW, Pat is doing the puzzle piece thing again in the fall so go ahead and start now on your pieces!

I too have so many blogs that I follow that it's overwhelming at times. I'm not complaining, I think that is wonderful.
Yes, of course I love comments no matter how short, as the others have said, it is nice to know someone is reading.
I also like to leave comments for others but I can't always leave a comment for everyone, especially when I get behind.
You are right, sometimes the comments I leave can seem redundant and trite, but after reading what others have said, I don't think that is a problem.

...ok....that was a long response..LOL

As you know, I have not been blogging long and I am in two minds about comments. Yes, it is very nice to have a 'hello' from readers. However, it is following up on the follow up that has the potential to become burdensome: i.e. responding to the comments, or checking other people's responses to comments. Full blown discussions are bound to rage in the comments segment of a politically oriented blog, but it is quite unnecessary in the context of a craft blog. I try to respond to most of the comments I receive but, in so doing, continue to contribute to everyone's workload. This begs the question: is it really necessary, or even desirable, to respond to comments that do not ask for further information about the post? We are a friendly lot and do not want to appear discourteous toward one another. However, it seems to me that we are setting ourselves up if we respond to each and every comment. As you pointed out, there are now many interesting blogs to follow and simply not enough hours in the day.

I think what everyone else has said pretty much covers it. Personally, I don't mind if someone leaves a short comment. Just knowing that the person stopped by to read my mindless blabber is good enough for me.

Mm, I came over because you had left a comment...so...my thoughts on the question are;
I only comment when I feel I absolutely must say something. I don't always reply to comments I receive.
I am keeping my tatting blog going because the readers of my other blog wouldn't be interested in my tatting...but I don't share much of myself in the tatting blog, so I am not worried if no-one comments. Its a catalogue of work, and nothing more. Long term there's a limit to how much one can say about a bit of tatting!
To sum up, I enjoy a compliment, but I may not reply. I only comment or compliment if I really have something to say.
p.s. I don't read very many blogs, but I always go over and check the blog of a commenter...

Comments are the cream on my blogging cake...essential even if only one word.

We all spend so much time writing our blogs and have really no idea who is reading them and without comments we don't know if it has been worthwhile.

I don't think it's absolutely necessary to reply to each comment, even tho it is nice, sometimes we just don't have enough time.

First of all, Bonnie, I really admire your restraint at ONLY having 141 blogs in your google reader! I am embarassed to admit how many blogs I have in mine...YIKES! It's really scary.
EVERY weekend is a blog-fest/comment-a-thon!!! It's horrible and it's a chore that I inflict on myself and have no one else to blame for, but me! LOL!

That said, I love the comments I get! Have you maybe noticed? I really appreciate each and every person who takes the time to come over and view my blog and THEN comment! It always makes my day! I'm not kidding.

I end up doing that thing you said you do and saying quick ones like "great job" or "beautiful work" or whatever, LOL! Even with that I don't comment on every single blog I visit or I'd be a total slave to my computer (which I think I already am).

This comment, is now turning into a novel! I'm only into my 4th blog of my blog-fest/comment-a-thon, though! LOL!

Happy tatting and be sure and come over and visit!! I've got a new blog post for you to comment on! ;)

I am usually days behind in reading
blogs, so didn't think it appropriate to comment. I don't post freqently, but do really
appreciate the 3 or 4 who comment.

I like to see comments no matter how short on my blog. I think when you blog you put yourself out there and need to know people think you are worth there time. I don't always post because I don't always have finished projects to share. But I enjoy reading all the blogs I follow and have bookmarked! (NOT 141-but alot!Lol.)

Hi Bonnie,

I only visit a handful of blogs compared to some of you, but always try to visit those who leave a comment on my posts. Some people I only have blog comments to let them know I appreciated their time. I don't always comment when I visit other blogs - I have dropped in here quite a few times - but if I have the time and a reason I usually do. On so saying, I do love comments on my blog! LOML has given up blogging because no-one leaves comments and he feels it is not of interest to anyone! I think I would be the same sometimes :)

Hey, I just stopped by for a bit and saw this and thought I'd add my 2 cents worth - YES! I love it when someone leaves a comment of even one word. I'm like a little kid checking the mailbox to see if I got a letter...If it wasn't for the feedback wouldn't it be just as well to keep a diary on your computer that no one sees as to blog?

Had to add my 2 cents since I have been a "mommy blogger" for 2 1/2 years with low-to-zero comments. Fair amount of eyeballs, but no comment love.

I started a tatting blog mostly to preserve content I created back in the 1980's. Imagine my surprise (and delight) when other tatters started commenting on the blog before I had even finished setting it up!

So, YES, count me among the set who appreciate comments, no matter how small.

And thank you to each and every person who has visited or will drop by for a visit. The nice notes I have received thus far have been so encouraging.

I appreciate each and every comment Bonnie. I love seeing your tatting projects. They are so delicate and so beautiful. Sorry to hear about your GUF.
